“Greenlight Capital” earned an 8.2% profit, outperforming the market average.

The hedge fund “Greenlight Capital” earned an 8.2% profit in the first quarter of 2025, outperforming the market average. The primary reason for this success was their investment in gold. In a letter to investors, the fund’s founder David Einhorn noted that gold was the most successful asset in their portfolio, with gold prices rising by 19% in the first quarter.

Einhorn also expressed in the letter that the policies of the Trump administration are expected to negatively impact economic growth and reduce consumer confidence in the market. As a result, they opened short positions on several consumer goods companies’ stocks. Since gold acts as a hedge against inflation, Greenlight Capital increased their gold holdings anticipating higher inflation.

Additionally, they believe that the U.S. Federal Reserve will need to lower interest rates more aggressively than currently expected and have invested in SOFR (secured overnight financing rate) futures accordingly.
